BACKGROUND
Golden Bay Friends of Nepal started with a local fundraiser offering dal bhat and masala chai in the local village green a few days after the devastating Nepali earthquakes in April 2015. Several hundred dollars were sent to Thomas's (Taj's) dear friend/brother Achni Dev in his home village of Bhumlutar, Nepal (Kavre district) where 80% of structures collapsed or were severely damaged. Those initial funds went a very long way and provided dozens of families with emergency supplies (food, medicine, water containers) and emergency shelter (tarps & blankets). And so the seed for Golden Bay Friends of Nepal was planted... |
No overhead/no costs = 100% to Nepal
|
ACHIEVEMENTS
Eight years on, we've helped rebuild 32 structures, built a small two-room teaching centre (Golden Bay Friendship Academy) where 50+ local students from 7 villages now learn English, Computers and Organic Agriculture and receive hope, love and inspiration. We also offer free training, workshops and seedlings to empower the local subsistence farmers to grow more valuable organic food (coffee, tea, garlic, tomatoes, pineapples, avocado, etc) to generate some income to rebuild their homes - and their lives. We have built a community greenhouse for training, mushroom farm for training and income, composting toilet and washing area for cleanliness, installed electricity into the Academy and recently established an Internet connection to enable training and teaching from the world. Your donations will enable this to happen, and all of the help created to date comes from generous donors like you. Dheri, dheri dhanyabad (thank you very, very much)! 100% has always and will always go to Nepal |

October 2019 - 40 Pairs of Turkeys Distributed
As you may recall, Golden Bay Friends of Nepal purchased 10 day old turkeys ("tarkis" in Nepali) in May to distribute to the students of Golden Bay Friendship Academy and their families. The turkeys can be used for egg (and income) production, food for better nutrition/festivals, or for reproduction. Kopila, Laxmi and Bhupal provided full training to the students. They were distributed to the excited students and their families in October to new and happy homes.
The students and villagers love their new turkeys as they are gentle, friendly and compassionate birds. They are also very effective "watch-birds" that squawk and honk whenever an intruder approaches a property. The villagers were also amazed to see several turkeys kill a snake and then share it amongst the entire group.
We asked what other type of birds they might like to receive and the overwhelmingly unanimous request from Bhumlutar was, "More turkeys, please!". It costs just under NZD$20 per pair of young (10 day-old) turkeys, medicine, food and transportation. We distributed 41 pairs to the villagers.

Feb 2020 - New bamboo greenhouse
Kopila, Bhupal and Ranjana built this amazing new bamboo greenhouse for additional growing capacity this year. The proceeds from the crops from our new greenhouse (tomatoes, capsicums, etc) will be used to pay for a portion of ongoing costs to run the Golden Bay Friendship Academy (electricity, WiFi, NGO registration fees, tea and sugar, etc).
March 2020 - Complete House Rebuild for Kamala (Dalit/untouchable widow) and her 3 children
Cost: NPR 467,000 (NZD$6,320/USD$4,068)
We are very excited to report that construction of the new house for Kamala (local Dalit/untouchable widow) and her 3 children is complete! The final plastering was completed just before lockdown started. We decided to use a design for a 1.5 story house, meaning the family has an annex in the roof for extra sleeping space, storage, etc. We have also helped Kamala to receive the full NPR300,000 earthquake victim grant from the Nepali government.
Our original budget was NPR 467,000 (NZD$6,320/USD$4,068) and we managed to complete the entire project at a cost of NPR 455,000. The remaining NPR12,000 will be used for paint (NPR6,000) and electricity and lights (NPR6,000). This has been the most ambitious project yet for Golden Bay Friends of Nepal in terms of organization, complexity and fundraising.

June 2020 - Adopt-A-Turkey Program Update - 140 more turkeys now in Bhumlutar
Our "Donate a Pair of Turkeys for $20" program over the past few months raised an amazing NZD$1400 (NPR 96,000) for the purchase and distribution of 140 additional turkeys (70 pairs) around the villages. The baby turkeys were just purchased this week and so far we have 100% survival rate.
Bhupal, Kopila and Ranjana will soon provide training to the local families who will receive training on proper turkey care, health and nutrition. We are also investigating the feasibility of setting up a women's/mother's group of local village women to share ideas, resources and information about their turkey experiences with the upcoming group of new turkey "shepherds".
So thank you everyone for your amazing support to bring more turkeys to Bhumlutar - the turkeys bring love, companionship, nutrition, opportunity and happiness to the Nepali families who raise and cherish them.
Dec 2020 - Poor villager assistance programme (helping 22 familes for 1 month)
Cost: NPR67.980, NZD$847.86, USD$574.26
Covid has closed borders, displaced workers and sent people from the cities back to live in their native villages. Even local labourers have been asked not to work in some cases for fear of spreading Covid to others. So the implications are deep and we can't yet fully understand them entirely. But what is clear is that some people are struggling more than usual and not everyone has been able to plant enough food and some are experiencing hardship.
We have identified 22 local families (many of them Dalits) who can use help. We have decided to supply them with 1 month of staple food supplies to help them get through tough times. We would like to thank a very generous anonymous donor who is sponsoring all 22 families for 1 month. More help will be needed - please get in touch if you would like to support other families. Here are the costs and details of what we are providing the 22 families:
Feb 2021 - Teaching supplies (pencils and notebooks) in Pachar and Aala Timreni villages (370 students)
Bhupal, Kopila and Ranjana visited two nearby schools to distribute notebooks, pencils and study books to the students. The grateful students will use their new supplies to catch up on some of the learning they have missed over the past year due to lockdowns and closures.
Number of students receiving pencils and notebooks: 370
Cost per student: NPR 120 / USD $1.00 / NZD $1.52
Total cost: NPR 44,400 / USD $375.16 / NZD $574.50
Schools receiving supplies:
Alaa Timreni village
Shree JwaalaDevi Aadharbhut lower secondary school
108 students in class 0 to 8
Pachar Village
Shree Bakshyashwori primary school
105 students in class 0 to 5
Thank you - the students are incredibly grateful!
March 2021 - Earthbag house for Dipa and her daughter started!
Funded (NZD$6,838.91, USD$4,844.00, NPR 678,290)
We are thrilled to announce that construction on Dipa's new earthbag house for Dipa and her daughter began last week! We received funds through the GiveALittle donation page ($3,695.00), at 2 fundraisers hosted in Golden Bay ($409.60) as well as several other generous donations from individuals and families. The Good Earth Nepal team arrived last week to get organized, trained the local labourers and broke ground, dug the foundation and started construction of the walls. We are thrilled with the progress so far, as are the villagers and Dipa!
Earthbag house completed for Dipa and her daughter Ishwori! Funded (NZD$6,838.91, USD$4,844.00, NPR 678,290)
A New Life for Dipa and Ishwori Dipa's and her daughter Ishwori are delighted with their new house built and constructed by our partner Good Earth Nepal. Earthbag houses are constructed out of local materials, provide natural insulation from the cold in winter and heat in summer, and are designed and approved by the Nepali government to be an earthquake-proof solution. As winter approaches and temperatures drop, we know that Dipa and her daughter Ishwori will be safe, comfortable and warm in their beautiful new earthbag house. A puja (blessing) ceremony was held in November on an auspicious day and Dipa and Ishwori moved into their beautiful new house! We wish them all the best on their next chapter of life and thank you for your generous donations to make this all possible.
A new house, bed frames, bedding, toilet, turkeys and animal shelter
Your donations have provided the following to Dipa and Ishwori to get them started on their new life:
Earthbag house & outside kitchen (NPR 648,690 / NZD $7751 / USD$5,500)
2 bed frames (NPR14,000, NZD$167, USD$117) 2 quilts (NPR5,000, NZD$59, USD$42)
2 mattresses (NPR5,000, NZD$59, USD$42)
1 toilet (NPR30,000, NZD$357, USD$251)
1 pair of turkeys (NPR2,000, NZD$28, USD$17)
1 animal shelter for goats and turkeys - no cost
We up-cycled some roofing sheets from Dipa's previous tin shack to construct a shelter for her goats and donated turkeys built her a toilet. Given Dipa's injured hip, she decided a buffalo would be too much physical work and so we used the donations for her buffalo to build her toilet instead.
BEFORE
AFTER
47% of Dipa's build budget creates local wages
Income created and skills learned Despite nationwide lockdowns in Nepal and material shortages, the team from Good Earth Nepal and more than a dozen local labourers and tradespeople managed to complete Dipa's beautiful new earthbag house. Dipa's project created 157 days of local labour and income and taught many of the local labourers new skills for the future. Approximately NPR 320,100 (47%) of the total budget of NPR678,290 for Dipa's house was for labour and directly helped local tradespeople earn income - and learn new skills.
Help program for Gopal Pariyar and his 4 children
Back in 2015 one of the most powerful images sent by email in the days after the earthquakes is the one below, showing Mr Gopal Pariyar of Bhumlutar standing in tears next to the pile of rubble which had been his family house. His wife and mother died in the earthquakes and lay buried in that rubble. Gopal stayed in the village for a short time with his 4 children but with no wife, no mother, no house, and no income he was eventually forced to leave and create a new life.
Gopal went to Banepa (a small city about 50kms from Bhumlutar), got a job driving a tractor, raised his children and tried to save some money to rebuild his village house. But last year he had an accident on the tractor, broke his collar bone and was no longer able to drive the tractor. He was forced to return to Bhumlutar and lived for a few months in a converted animal shelter on a neighbour's land (see photos below). We found out about Gopal's story and decided to help. Below you can read how Golden Bay Friends of Nepal has used your generous donations to help Gopal and his 4 children get back on their feet and start a new life.
GOPAL AND 4 CHILDREN BEFORE (FEB 2021)
USD$ 539 / NZD$ 766 for simple house, beds, mattresses, blankets, food and labour
With your generous donations, we set out to build Gopal and his 4 children a comfotable and safe house. Gopal is fortunate to have a piece of land in Bhumlutar with some mature trees and so we decided to fell some trees and use some of the timber for framing, support and for making windows and doors. With the purchase of some roofing sheets, we were able to construct a simple 2 room house for Gopal and his 4 children. Gopal and all the kids helped, Bhupal built the roof and we provided 12 days of labour to local labourers. Below is the full budget:

Food, clothes and seedlings
We learned of Gopal's desperate situation and decided we wanted to help. Gopal and his 4 children were living in a former chicken coop in a neighbour's land when they arrived back in the village. We initially provided some basics like food, clothing for his children and some seedlings.
Self-sufficiency with food
In addition to helping Gopal and his children build a simple house for shelter and security, we also wanted to help them grow food and improve their nutrition. We donated seedlings including corn, pumpkins, bitter gourd, beans, tomatoes and over the coming months we will employ a local ox driver to come and turn Gopal's soil so the family can plant food for sustainance and future income. We also donated a pair of locally bred turkeys.
Puja ceremony to bless the new house and happy family
A life changed...
Thank you for your donations and generosity.
May 2022: 62 turkeys more turkeys raised and distributed and re-gifted in the village
Why turkeys? Turkeys provide companionship, security, local income, eggs, nutrition, breeding & happiness : )
We want to thank you again for your donations to Adopt-A-Turkey program! This is our 2nd year having turkeys in the village and this year we purchased 31 pairs of locally raised turkeys from locals breeding them. We paid NPR1,000 per turkey for 62 turkeys (the same price as we can buy them from a turkey farm) and injected NPR 62,000 into the local economy. We want to continue this program and spread the love, happiness, nutrition and income these turkeys bring their happy owners. We distributed turkey pairs into nearby Aala Timreni and Pachar villages and want to continue spreading turkeys around the district. This project generated NPR 62,000 (NZD$775, US$550) in local income in the village!
Donate NZD$25 (or US$20) today to donate a pair of turkeys to a new family!

Bean 600
Cucumber 250
Golden bitter gourd 225
White bitter gourd 100
Eggplant/brinjal 700
Snake bitter 60
October 2022: Women’s health and income generation - sewing reusable menstrual pads
GBFON purchased 2 Indian made sewing machines this year with donations. Bhupal and Kopila have offered one room in their new house to be used by local women for a sewing project to make reusable, washable menstrual pads to be distributed to girls and women for free around the village. GBFON also hired the local village tailor for 7 days of sewing machine training for 12 village women. In the last several weeks, over 100 pads have be sewn by the hands of village women. Your donations will purchase 1 locally made pad for NPR50 / NZ$0.65 / US$0.38 each. Local women can come to the sewing room anytime with their children to socialize, sew menstrual pads, and generate income. Reusable menstrual pads reduce pollution and waste in the village. They enable girls to go to school with no fears or worries through their menstrual cycle, thus enabling better education. A win / win for all.
The approximate cost will be $3-5 per set including 2 day pads, 2 night pads, a carry pouch, and instructions. Get in touch if you would like to know more. More details will be forthcoming.

November 2022: Women’s health - Matribhumi smokeless stove project
Aim: Improve women's health and provide local income generation. 10 locals have been fully trained to install Matribhumi ICS (Improved Cookstoves) in villages around the region. Each install takes about 4-6 hours and generates NPR800 in wages for the installer (man or woman). This has the potential to employ 10 local people earning up to NPR1,600 (NZ$20.68/US$12.28) per day. To put this in perspective, a skilled carpenter earns NPR1,200-1,400 per day. With substantial donations, this could create high-income needed jobs in Bhumlutar.
Goal: Our initial goal is to install 100 smokeless stoves over the next 12 months. This number can grow exponentially with local adoption and your generous donations.
Local income generation: NPR800/NZ$10.34/US$6.14 in income per stove for a local villager, 100 stoves will generate NPR80,000/NZ$1,034/US$614 in income for local villagers, 1000 stoves will generate NPR800,000/NZ$10,340/US$6,140 in income for local villagers!
Carbon emissions reduction: up to 99% less smoke for women and children, one Matribhumi Improved Cookstove reduces 2.91 tons of CO2 per year in the atmosphere.
Highly efficient - uses 60% less wood (40kg weekly vs 100kg for typical wood stove)
Safety - minimal risk of child burns versus metal / rocket stove
Affordable - NPR3,000/US$25/NZ$40 per family
Easy to use
100% local materials - air supply disc made from recycled metal from Nepal, other materials 100% Nepali made
Maintains local traditional food culture (cooking on wood stove)
Local income generation - provides good paying jobs for 10 local village people
Cost to donate 1 complete stove:
NPR3,000/US$25/NZ$40 per family (materials: NPR2,000, transportation: NPR200, labour/income: NPR 800)
